Overview
Gynecomastia is a condition affecting men, characterised by increased breast volume. It usually affects both breasts and rarely just one. Gynecomastia can be safely corrected by a plastic surgeon.
It is classified as:
Most cases are a mix of both.
WHAT WE CORRECT
The procedure aims for the reduction of a feminine appearance in the male chest, regardless of the underlying cause (hormonal disorders, heredity, certain medications or sudden weight fluctuation). It offers substantial benefits in the following cases:
Removes the firm, enlarged glandular tissue behind the nipple, which does not respond to exercise or diet.
Reduces stubborn fat in the chest area (often using modern liposuction), sculpting the chest.
Addresses sagging skin that can result from significant weight loss or chronic chest stretching, offering immediate tightening.
Corrects the aesthetic appearance of a strongly protruding areola and nipple, restoring them to a flat, natural position.
Beauty by Design
Gynecomastia surgery removes excess glandular tissue and fat to restore a flatter, firmer male chest contour.
Preparation before the procedure
Prior to surgery, a medical examination is carried out, the medical history is recorded and any conditions that could cause complications are ruled out. Additionally, as with any surgery, stopping smoking before the procedure is recommended.
TECHNIQUE
General anaesthesia is required in the case of true gynecomastia. In the case of pseudogynecomastia, local anaesthesia may also be used, as the patient undergoes liposuction only.
A circular incision is typically made below the nipple, at the skin border, in order to remove all the glandular tissue. If the problem is resolved solely through liposuction, the scars are one on each side and are very small — up to 4 millimetres.
Excision of the gland and/or aspiration of fat is performed.
Sutures are absorbable if glandular excision is performed. Alternatively, they are removed after 1 week if only liposuction is performed.
Procedure Details
AFTER SURGERY
The patient will need to wear a special elastic vest for at least 1 month.
Recovery is almost immediate. The patient will be able to drive normally and visit the gym after 4 weeks.
Results
Representative gynecomastia cases. Results are always assessed in the context of the patient's anatomy, type of gynecomastia and personal goals.
FAQ
Yes, the result is usually long-lasting. The glandular tissue removed surgically during the procedure cannot regenerate. However, to maintain a sculpted, flat result in the long term, the patient should avoid extreme weight fluctuations (which would increase local fat again) and the use of certain substances (e.g. anabolic steroids) that disrupt the hormonal profile.
In the first decades of life, the only issue is cosmetic — and inevitably carries significant psychological impact. However, after the age of 40, there is an increased risk of malignancy, which unfortunately carries a much worse prognosis than in women.
If it is pseudogynecomastia (i.e. only fat), proper nutrition and targeted chest exercises can significantly improve the appearance. However, if there is hypertrophy of the glandular tissue (true gynecomastia), the glandular tissue does not burn and does not regress with any form of exercise or diet. In these cases, surgical removal is the main effective solution.
