What It Is – What It Offers

Correction of laxity and removal of excess skin and fat in the arms

Brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift, is the surgical procedure in which excess loose skin is removed from the upper arms, which develops either after significant weight loss or due to the natural ageing process. If laxity coexists with localised fat, liposuction is also performed during the same surgery.

What We Correct

When can an arm lift help?

Brachioplasty is planned individually to restore anatomical harmony and firmness to the upper arms. The procedure offers a solution in the following cases:

  • Significant skin laxity after major weight lossRemoves the large excess of loose skin that develops after dieting or bariatric surgery, which does not respond to exercise.
  • Loss of firmness and "hanging" tissueCorrects the aesthetic irregularity on the inner surface of the arms (associated with age-related laxity or photoageing), restoring a youthful contour.
  • Stretch marks and significant skin stretchingStrategically removes the section of skin whose elastic fibres have ruptured (stretch marks) due to sudden weight fluctuation, leaving a visibly smoother, firmer skin.

Beauty by Design

Toned arms, without loose skin.

Arm lift removes excess loose skin from the upper arms for a firmer, more balanced contour.

Preparation before surgery

Preparation before surgery

The foundation for a safe procedure and a satisfactory result is the initial consultation at the clinic. During the appointment, Dr. Athanasios Pallantzas carries out a detailed clinical assessment of the upper limbs. He examines the degree of skin laxity, the quality and elasticity of the skin, as well as the thickness of the subcutaneous fat, in order to select the appropriate surgical technique. Once the date of surgery is confirmed, pre-operative tests are ordered, any medication is adjusted (if applicable) and a recommendation to stop smoking is given.

TECHNIQUE

How brachioplasty is performed – step by step

The procedure is carried out in an organised surgical setting and follows these stages with great precision:

01

Pre-operative Planning (Marking) and Anaesthesia

Before the patient is taken to the operating theatre and while still in a standing position, Dr. Athanasios Pallantzas carries out the detailed geometric planning on the arms. Using a surgical marker, the precise lines of the future incisions are mapped and the excess area of skin and fat to be removed is delineated. General anaesthesia follows.

02

The Surgical Incisions

Depending on the plan designed, the doctor proceeds with the incisions:

Mini Brachioplasty: The incision is limited exclusively within the natural fold of the armpit, for mild cases.

Classic Brachioplasty: The incision extends along the inner or posterior surface of the arm (from the armpit to the elbow). It is positioned strategically so as to be hidden as much as possible during everyday arm movement.

03

Liposuction (Sculpting) and Removal of Excess

Before skin removal, if deemed necessary, advanced liposuction is applied to reduce the persistent localised fat, reducing the volume of the arm and sculpting the contour. The excess loose skin is then removed with millimetre precision. The underlying tissues and muscle fascia are tightened and anchored with internal sutures, restoring stability.

04

Plastic Closure & Dressing

The incisions are closed using advanced intradermal plastic suture techniques with absorbable sutures, so that the future scar becomes as fine as possible. At the end, a specialised compression dressing or elastic sleeves are applied.

Procedure profile

Arm lift at a glance

Duration of surgery
Usually 2 – 3 hours
Anaesthesia
General anaesthesia
Pain
Not considered particularly painful. There may be minor discomfort that is managed with standard pain relief
Age limit
From 18 years of age and above. Most common age group 40–60 years (due to reduced skin elasticity or weight loss)
Result
Immediate improvement of laxity. The final aesthetic result stabilises approximately 2 to 3 months post-operatively

AFTER SURGERY

What to expect after brachioplasty – Recovery

01

Support & Protection

The patient will need to wear a compression garment for at least 6 weeks after surgery in order to stabilise the tissues and reduce swelling.

02

Scar Care

Daily gentle massage with silicone gel is recommended after suture removal, to soften and flatten the scar. Sun protection with SPF 50+ is mandatory for the first year.

03

Rest & Restrictions

Rest is required for approximately 15 days after surgery. Physical exercise should be avoided for at least 1 month.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about arm lift.

Yes, the results are usually long-lasting, provided that the patient maintains a stable body weight. If there are major weight fluctuations, the skin may become loose again.

Yes, this is achieved through the Mini Brachioplasty technique. This technique is intended exclusively for patients who present with mild to moderate laxity, localised primarily near the armpit area. In this case, the incision is limited and hidden within the anatomical fold of the armpit, without extending along the arm. However, if there is severe skin laxity (e.g. after massive weight loss), the classic incision along the arm is necessary to achieve a firm and youthful result.

The formation of the final scar appearance is a process that matures gradually over a period of 6 to 12 months. After suture removal, the patient follows a strict post-operative protocol that includes daily gentle massage with specialised silicone gels or the application of silicone sheets, which soften and flatten the scar. In addition, strict sun protection of the area using a high-factor sunscreen (SPF 50+) for the first year is mandatory, in order to prevent discolouration (hyperpigmentation) of the skin.
